How to use this online metronome

Type a tempo between 20 and 300 BPM, or nudge it up and down with the plus and minus buttons, choose how many beats are in each bar, and press Start. The first beat of every bar has a higher click so you can hear where the bar begins, and the dots show which beat is playing. You can change the tempo while it runs, and the volume slider sets the level.

Metronome tap: set the tempo from a song

Press Tap to set tempo in time with a song and the metronome copies your tempo. That makes it a metronome tapper for any track you can hear. If you would rather measure first, use the tap tempo counter and follow the link under its pad to open the result here.

What beats per bar means

A bar, also called a measure, is a group of beats, and the time signature says how many. Four beats per bar is common, but the selector runs from 2 to 7, so you can practice with three beats for waltz time or try a five beat pattern. The accent always marks beat 1. The time signatures guide explains what the numbers mean.

Subdivisions

A subdivision splits each beat into smaller equal parts. Eighths give two clicks per beat, triplets give three and sixteenths give four. The extra clicks are softer and lower in pitch, so the beat itself still stands out. The BPM to ms calculator shows how long each of those note lengths lasts at your tempo.

Count-in

Choose one or two bars of count-in and the metronome plays that many bars of plain beats first, without subdivisions, so you can come in on time. Tick Stop after the count-in if you want the clicks to end there, which is handy when you want to play without the click.

Stage view and keeping the screen on

Stage view fills the screen with a large BPM and beat number that are easier to read from a distance. Some browsers let it go fully full screen, and others fill the window instead. Keep the screen on asks your browser not to let the screen sleep while the metronome runs. Not every browser supports it, and if yours does not, the option does not appear.

Common questions

How do I set a metronome to the BPM of a song?

Play the song and press Tap to set tempo on each beat. The tempo box fills in as you go. Then press Start.

What tempo range does it cover?

20 to 300 BPM.

Does it keep steady time?

The clicks are scheduled ahead of time on the browser's audio clock, which is more reliable than a simple timer.

What is a subdivision in a metronome?

It divides each beat into equal smaller clicks, such as two eighth notes or three triplet notes per beat.

Does the count-in change the tempo?

No. It uses the same BPM as the rest of the session.

Why can't I see the Keep the screen on option?

Your browser does not support it.

Can I get delay times for this tempo?

Yes. Enter the BPM in the BPM to ms calculator.
